Reading a Book

WHAT IS ORTON-GILLINGHAM?

Orton-Gillingham is an approach to reading instruction which employs multi-sensory strategies for a whole body experience. Students will follow a specific sequence of reading concepts, starting at their first missed concept in the sequence and building up to sophisticated reading and spelling concepts. The program covers phonics, spelling, decodable reading, vocabulary, listenings comprehension, reading comprehension, fluency, and "red words". Red words are words that are high frequency and do not fall in to typical spelling patterns, therefore require explicit instruction and review.

For the most effective instruction, two 45-minute sessions weekly are recommended. Though twice weekly is the optimal cadence, I am happy to meet with your child at whatever frequency works best for your family.

MY BACKGROUND

After completing my Masters in Elementary Education with a Special Education Certificate from Fairleigh Dickinson University, I began my career in the classroom. I have experience teaching Orton-Gillingham to students in grades from K - 8 from many different social, emotional and academic backgrounds.
